Welcoming a new child into your life is always a massive change. It’s one of the most exciting changes we can experience, and on top of all of the obvious ways that our new family member will change your life, have you considered the way the new arrival will change the way you clean? In some ways, maybe, but babies require special considerations that some people may not even know about. This week, we compiled some top tips for helping new parents clean with a baby in the house.
Some Easy Do’s and Don’ts
Cleaning when a baby is present is a balancing act that can be hard to finesse at first, at least until you get the hang of it. Your baby spends a lot of time on the floor, and as such, you’ll want to clean it far more frequently than you used to. Those hands that the baby uses to crawl around are going to go right in their mouth at some point, after all. It might be tempting to use a more intense cleaning chemical on the floor to make sure everything is extra clean. However, consider how close the baby will be to all those fumes. Think about residue that those chemicals may be leaving behind!
Your little one is going to be far more sensitive than you realize. Those little eyes can be irritated by things you might not even notice. So when you need to do a deep clean, try to see if a relative or loved one can watch the baby while you’re cleaning. Next, dilute your chemicals even still to make airing out your home that much easier. Then, rinse out anything that might upset the skin of a curious new adventurer. If you notice anything else crawling around – bugs, mice, or other pests – the time for poisons is in the past. If your baby can pick it up, they’re going to try to taste it. All harmful chemicals, for that matter, should be kept out of reach.
Making it Easier
There are lots of little tricks you’ll pick up as you set down the road of parenthood. Some, though, you’ll wish you learned a little sooner. For example, did you know vacuuming before nap-time can help your baby sleep deeper? The white noise of the vacuum cleaner seems to resemble the sound of the womb, which can help baby fall asleep when you finish. Continuing to clean while the baby is napping will help acclimate your child to noise, so you won’t have to worry about every little thing waking them up.
Learning how to multitask is also helpful. Being able to plan to clean and organize multiple things in a single trip may sound like more work, but if you can finish multiple tasks at once, you’ll wind up saving more time and thus have more time to unwind and relax when all is said and done. For example, if you’re heading to the kitchen to grab a towel, throw a piece of dirty laundry in the hamper on the way. Being able to do little things on the way to doing something else will keep problems from piling up too high.
