This article is being written to be published in June, which means the traditional time period known as “spring cleaning” has passed. That does not mean you cannot still do the traditional “spring cleaning” of your home. The name is a misnomer and a deep cleaning of a person’s home can be done any time of the year. In this article, we will discuss the areas of a person’s home that they should focus on during a deep cleaning session.
Start With The Bedrooms
On the best places to start when embarking on deep cleaning in your house is the bedrooms. The bedrooms should be a sanctuary of calmness and relaxation. A cluttered bedroom may lead to anxiety and a dirty one can exacerbate allergies and lower the autoimmune system from fighting colds and viruses. The following steps should be taken when cleaning the bedroom:
- Clean out the closet and remove any items or clothing that is not normally used.
- Launder the bed sheets and pillowcases.
- Dry Clean pillows, bedspreads, and/or comforters.
- Vacuum the mattress and boxspring. If the mattress is a spring mattress, then flip it over. If the mattress is a foam mattress then turn it around 180 degrees.
- Move the bedroom furniture to vacuum, sweep, and/or mop under those areas.
The Bathrooms
After the bedroom, the bathroom is the most likely room where people go to seek an expectation of privacy. The bathroom is also the one room that doubles up as a place for self-hygiene which ironically can make it very unhygienic thus requiring it to be cleaned often. The following steps should be taken when cleaning the bathroom:
- Shower curtains and shower linings should be cleaned and sanitize and possibly replaced altogether.
- If the shower has a door, then the doors need to be cleaned with a cleaning solution.
- Use bleach to scrub the bathtub, shower, toilets, and sinks.
- Use a snake to pull out any hair or debris that might be clogging drains
- If the bathroom has a small garbage can, disinfect with bleach as well
The Kitchen
The kitchen is perhaps the most important common area of the house. This is where food storage and preparation are done. It is important to ensure that the kitchen is cleaned to prevent bacteria contamination. The following steps should be taken when cleaning the kitchen (please note this is not comprehensive):
Inside Appliance
- Remove everything from the fridge and freezer. Anything that is past its expiration date should be discarded. Remove all the shelves and drawers and clean the walls, base, and roof of the fridge and freezer with a cleaning solution.
- Before returning the drawers and shelves to the fridge and freezer, make sure to clean both sides of the shelves and the inside and outside of the drawers with a cleaning solution.
- If the oven has a self-cleaning mode, then turn it on. If not, then remove the oven racks and use a cleaning solution designed to clean oven racks. Also, clean the inside surface are of the oven as well. If possible, try to pull out the oven from the wall to remove and clean anything that might have fallen between the oven or walls.
- Remove the oven grates from the burners and clean them with a specialized solution.
- If there is a microwave, clean the inside of the microwave by boiling a cup of water first and creating steam. The steam will loosen the food particles and crime making it easier to clean.
- If there is a dishwasher, run a cycle without any dishes to give it a self-clean.
Outside Appliances
- If you have stainless steel appliances, use a cleaning solution designed for stainless steals to clean the surface area and remove streaks.
- Remove everything from the pantry and wipe down the shelves. Discard any items that have been expired.
- Remove items from cabinets and cupboards, doing one at a time, and clean the inside. When placing the items back, decide if the item is still usable or needed, otherwise discard it.
- Vacuum, sweep and mop the floor
Laundry Room
Some homes have a separate laundry room. If your home has a laundry room, then the following steps should be taken to ensure it is clean:
- If possible, pull out both the washer and dryer to clean anything that might have fallen behind them.
- Clean out the lint basket of the dryer
- Run a cycle on the washer without anything in it to give it a self-clean
- If there are closets or shelves, remove the items, wipe down the shelves, and return the items.
- Vacuum or sweep and mop the floor

For the rest of the house, the following steps should be taken to clean:
- Clean the windows, inside and out. Remove window screens and rinse them. Replace after they are dried.
- Use a microfiber cloth to clean the blinds. Remove curtains to launder or dry-clean.
- Dust and clean air vents
